Workforce, Education & Training  (WeaT)

About the FORUM

This forum was established in order to support the development of an effective and competent critical care workforce through reviewing and supporting education and training needs of staff.

The forum has membership from clinical educators and mentors based in our local critical care units, along with partners from our Higher Education Providers such as the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN) and Cumbria University. Together they develop educational tools and strategies to aid staff in developing knowledge and skills in caring for the acutely and critically ill patient. Meetings take place every 3 months and the Chair of the group reports directly to the CEG (Clinical Effectiveness Group). If you have an interest in education and supporting staff development and would like to get involved, speak to your critical care unit Educator or equivalent educational lead.

National Critical Care Comptencies

The Network has been working closely with others across the UK on reviewing and updating the national Step Competencies for Registered Nurses working Adult Critical Care. These clinical competencies form an important framework to support the development of a knowledgeable and skilled nursing workforce. By utilising these competencies within critical care units across the UK, we can work towards the goal of having a nursing workforce that is competent and transferrable. During our recruitment processes we can be assured nurses have been exposed to the same assessments in clinical practice where the Step Competencies have been used.

Version 2

We are pleased to announce that Version 2 of the national critical care competencies are now available. These documents can be downloaded from the Education and Training page.

A PowerPoint presentation is also available here for you to view how and why these competencies should be applied to your critical care area.
